In the German state of Brandenburg, a heated debate is unfolding within the Left party, centring around Andreas Buettner, the state's anti-Semitism commissioner. Buettner, who joined the Left party in 2015 after stints with the CDU and FDP, is facing criticism over his stance on Israel.

Recent events, such as the increase in antisemitic crimes following the attack by the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas on Israel, have intensified the debate. Buettner has been vocal in his support of Israel, a position that has drawn criticism from some members within the party.

Nine members from various states, including Brandenburg, have accused Buettner of violating the party line. They object to his criticism of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and his statement that recognising a state of Palestine would be the worst step one could take.

Buettner defends his position, stating that the party's resolutions bind the party executive, but not each individual member. He also emphasises that he expresses solidarity with Israel. However, his critics argue that his views are at odds with the party's stance, which stands on the side of oppressed peoples.

The chairman of the Brandenburg Left, Sebastian Walter, has weighed in on the matter, stating that exclusion motions should never replace substantive debates. The Brandenburg state arbitration commission will decide on Buettner's matter regarding his potential expulsion from the Left party.

Buettner has faced harsh criticism on social media, being called names such as "Zionist pig," "child murderer," and "genocide denier." Despite this, Walter has expressed that there's room for Buettner in the Left.

The resolution from the Left party's federal conference states that Israel's starvation of the civilian population in Gaza is a method to hasten the destruction of all Palestinians' livelihoods. The party in Brandenburg has demanded a stop to expulsion and famine in Gaza and the implementation of international law.

Buettner has also criticised the party leadership for not meeting with the Central Council of Jews, stating he suggested this in October. The Left party in Brandenburg has been vocal in its calls for a stop to antisemitic crimes and for fighting against antisemitic attitudes. The anti-Semitism commissioner, elected by the state parliament, serves as a contact person for Jewish women and men in Brandenburg in this endeavour.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how the brandenburg state arbitration commission will rule on Buettner's case and whether this will impact the perception of anti-Semitism within the Brandenburg's Left party in the context of the ongoing Gaza conflict.

  1. The European Parliament is expected to discuss the Parliament resolution on the Commission communication on the European Union's role in the fight against terrorism, particularly in light of the recent increase in antisemitic crimes following the conflict in Israel and Gaza, and the controversial stance of Andreas Buettner, the state's anti-Semitism commissioner in the German state of Brandenburg.
  2. With the escalating debate about Buettner's views on Israel, policy and legislation regarding Europe's approach towards war and conflicts, crime and justice, and general news, especially those related to war, conflict, politics, and crime, become increasingly relevant.
  3. Despite the heated debates within political parties about individual positions, the importance of maintaining open discussions and civil discourse within the realm of policy and politics cannot be overstated, as demonstrated by the ongoing case of Andreas Buettner in the Left party and the ongoing Gaza conflict.
