Democratic representatives manage to halt Mace's endeavor to reprimand Omar with a censure motion in the House

In a recent turn of events, the Democratic effort to censure Rep. Cory Mills over several accusations has been abandoned, following the defeat of the Ilhan Omar censure resolution.

The resolution was proposed by Rep. Ilhan Omar, who herself has faced controversy, having been removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in February 2023 after making antisemitic comments.

The censure of a lawmaker is a formal reprimand, requiring a simple majority for passage. Censuring Rep. Ilhan Omar would have resulted in the stripping of her committee assignments, including the Committee on Education and Workforce and the Committee on the Budget.

However, the censure resolution did not pass, with a close vote of 214-213. Four House Republicans joined Democrats to prevent the censure and removal of Rep. Omar from committee assignments. The GOP defections were Reps. Mike Flood of Nebraska, Jeff Hurd of Colorado, Tom McClintock of California, and Cory Mills of Florida.

The defeat of the resolution came after Rep. Omar hit back at Rep. Nancy Mace, stating that the resolution did not contain a single quote from her because she couldn't find any. Mace had claimed that Omar defends political violence and refuses to condemn the loss of innocent lives.

Meanwhile, Mills, who faced accusations of assault, threatening an ex-girlfriend, misrepresenting events around his Bronze Star, making false financial disclosures, and campaign finance violations, thanked the Metropolitan Police Department for their investigation into the false and misleading accusations made against him. The Metropolitan Police Department has not yet confirmed whether the assault charge against Mills has been dropped.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Mace's comments about Omar, stating they have put a target on her back. Texas Progressive Rep. Greg Casar also gave notice of intent to offer a separate privileged resolution to censure Florida GOP Rep. Cory Mills over the aforementioned accusations.

Speaker Mike Johnson has not weighed in on either resolution regarding Ilhan Omar or Cory Mills.

In a separate interview, Rep. Ilhan Omar commented on the murder of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, stating that it was "really mortifying" and added that his words and actions have been recorded for over a decade. Jeffries also mentioned the recent political violence, including the assassinations of Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and Kirk.

These developments mark a significant turn in the political landscape, with the fate of both Omar and Mills remaining uncertain as the investigations continue.
