In the face of relentless political distress, Hong Kong's final active pro-democracy group, the League of Social Democrats (LSD), finds itself on the precipice of oblivion. The group's chairman, Chan Po Ying, announced their dissolution owing to immense political pressure from the Chinese government's 2020 security laws[1][3].

Since 2006, the LSD stood as a beacon for democratic reform and the working class in the former British colony. However, in 2021, an electoral overhaul barred opposition members from standing in elections, stripping the LSD of its electoral representation[1][2]. The group's dissolution marks the third major opposition party to withdraw in the past two years in Hong Kong, leaving no formal, organized pro-democracy opposition in the Chinese Special Administrative Region.

The 2020 security law tightened again in 2024, imposing heavy penalties, including life imprisonment, on activities deemed subversive[3]. Organized protests in the former British colony virtually ceased under the law's shadow. Chan Po Ying, the chairwoman, lamented the erosion of civil society, the silencing of grassroots voices, the omnipresent red lines, and the draconian suppression of dissenting opinions as the LSD's intentions and vision were gradually suffocated[3].

Party founder, Leung Kwok Hung, currently resides in prison on a subversion charge. Several other leading members have also been convicted or are under pressure. Despite these hardships, Chan praises the party for staying true to its mission and those who've been imprisoned for the cause[3].
