Demi Vollering Faces "Drama Queen" Label, Vigorously Defends Herself

Demi Vollering, the runner-up in the 2022 Tour de France Femmes, has found herself under scrutiny following accusations of being a "drama queen." The stigma originates from criticisms by some observers and insiders who perceived her reactions to crashes, health concerns, and race events as exaggerated drama.

Vollering, however, has strongly refuted these accusations. She emphasizes that the criticism stems from misunderstandings and ignorance about her situation and mindset. Vollering believes that cycling inherently involves crashes and physical challenges, and she prioritizes her health and resilience above all.

In her closing press conference in Châtel, Vollering addressed the accusations head-on. She stated, "I feel I am being hunted with a stigma of being a 'drama queen,' particularly in the Netherlands. I want to make it clear that I am a professional athlete, and my reactions are a result of the intensity and pressure of the race."

Vollering's teammates, she claims, would say differently about her behavior. She plans to go "back to the drawing board" in her pursuit of winning the Tour de France Femmes in the future.

The tension between Vollering and her critics first flared at the race. Stephen Delcourt, her team boss, expressed a complaint about a lack of respect in the peloton after an incident on stage three. His comments were labeled "ridiculous" by Jos van Emden, sports director of Visma-Lease a Bike. Van Emden's comments were made to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

Despite the controversy, Vollering expressed satisfaction with her team's performance during the Tour de France Femmes 2022. She stated, "I am proud of my team's performance. We gave it our all, and I believe the 2022 Tour de France was more favorable to pure climbers."

In 2021, Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM zondacrypto) won the Tour de France Femmes by a margin of four seconds over Vollering. This year, Vollering finished almost four minutes behind the winner, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot (Visma-Lease a Bike). Despite this, Vollering did not express any disappointment with her performance.

Vollering felt she was being "hunted" with the stigma of being a "drama queen." However, she did not comment on the criticism she has received from Jos van Emden or Stephen Delcourt.

Some commentators have noted the challenging nature of the race, the high level of competition, and the physical toll it takes on riders, suggesting that Vollering’s concerns and responses are justified rather than dramatic. Media coverage sympathetically portrayed Vollering’s struggle after her crash and her determination to continue competing despite setbacks, portraying her attitude as professional and focused rather than theatrical.

Overall, the "drama queen" label appears to have been a fringe narrative that Demi Vollering has actively pushed back against by publicly clarifying her perspective on health, safety, and mental toughness during the Tour de France Femmes.
