Demanding the Resignation of Rosendo Gómez Piedra, Ayotzinapa Case Prosecutor Allegedly Involved in Corruption; Fourty-Three Parents Accuse Him of Bribery and Misconduct
In a conversation following this afternoon's meeting at the National Palace, the parents and relatives of the 43 missing Ayotzinapa normalistas presented the president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, with the resignation demand for the case's prosecutor, Rosendo Gómez Piedra.
Melitón Ortega, the spokesperson for the families, reported that the president showed no response, but the request was nonetheless placed on the table. It was revealed that the resignation request arose due to allegations of corruption within the case.
Upon exiting the National Palace, Melitón Ortega was asked the reason behind the request for Gómez Piedra's resignation, and he responded that the corruption that has been reported is the basis for their position. He further stated that the parents believe there is potential for corruption in the case.
When asked if Gómez Piedra responded to these accusations or defended his actions, Melitón Ortega stated that no one spoke, defended, or intervened in the matter, but the parents have already submitted the resignation request.
Regarding Gómez Piedra's earlier statements that "we have searched over 800 locations in the mountains for the bodies," Melitón Ortega declared, "Given the evidence that has been presented, the parents are presenting this request, as he has lost their trust due to a lack of clear answers." Additionally, the field search topic was discussed in the meeting with President Sheinbaum.
The parents of the missing students have grown disillusioned with the slow progress made in the investigation, which has been ongoing for close to 11 years. As a result, Mexican officials, including Claudia Sheinbaum, have expressed their willingness to consider changes in the leadership of the investigation's unit. They are also contemplating new investigative strategies to potentially uncover additional information about the case.
