A Celebration of Congregational Song: The 40th Anniversary of The Hymnal 1982

Forty years ago, a bold step forward in congregational song was taken with the publication of The Hymnal 1982. This comprehensive collection of music, published by Church Publishing, includes a diverse range of genres such as early American and Southern folk hymns, spirituals, plainsong, Lutheran chorales, and new texts and tunes by contemporary composers.

The creation of The Hymnal 1982 is the subject of a new book, "Shapers of The Hymnal 1982," authored by Marty Wheeler Burnett. This special 40th anniversary edition celebrates the music in the hymnal and provides insights into its development. Burnett, a past President of the Association of Anglican Musicians and a current member of the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music of The Episcopal Church, interviewed poets, composers, clergy, liturgists, and scholars involved in creating The Hymnal 1982 for the book.

Marty Wheeler Burnett, an Associate Professor of Church Music and Director of Chapel Music at Virginia Theological Seminary, holds a Bachelor of Music, a Master of Music degree in organ performance from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the University of the South.

The Church Pension Group (CPG), a financial services organisation that serves The Episcopal Church, maintains three lines of business: benefits, property and casualty insurance, and publishing. CPG also offers property and casualty insurance and book and music publishing, including the official worship materials of the Church.

"Shapers of The Hymnal 1982" is being published by Church Publishing in November. The book, which has 128 pages, can be pre-ordered now. For media inquiries, please contact Anne Zaccardelli, Marketing Specialist at Church Publishing, at 212-592-6382 or [email protected].
