Clash over APC Leadership in Delta North: Onyeme vs Nwoko

Delta North APC Leadership Dispute Erupts Between Deputy Governor and Ned Nwoko Faction

In the political landscape of Delta State, a power struggle is brewing between Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme and Senator Ned Nwoko over the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Delta North Senatorial District.

Nwoko, who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) earlier this year, is considered by several APC stakeholders as the senior-most figure in Delta North due to his long-standing political career.

However, Onyeme, a fellow resident of the district, maintains that the role of political conveners traditionally belongs to the deputy governor. In a statement released by his Press Secretary, Fidelis Egugbo, Onyeme points to previous administrations to support his claim.

Citing examples from James Ibori's and Emmanuel Uduaghan's tenures, the statement indicates that political meetings in Delta North were commonly held at the Obior home of the then-deputy governor, Benjamin Elue and, later, the late Prof Amos Utuama [1].

On the other hand, Nwoko's camp disagrees. A prominent APC figure, speaking to Punch Thursday, contested Onyeme’s claim by stating, "Senator Nwoko is the high-ranking officer in Delta North, and by party rules, he remains the Delta North leader of the party. Is Onyeme the deputy governor of Delta North? How can he assume the party leader of our district?" [1]

As both sides make their claims, the situation remains unresolved. A meeting to address the issue is scheduled for June 14 at Senator Nwoko's residence [1].

At the state level, the APC leadership has been a topic of discussion featuring figures like Festus Keyamo, who backs Oborevwori for the state leadership. However, this discussion does not directly clarify the leadership within the Delta North Senatorial District.
