Postscript

It's a devastating blow for the Bavarian folk music scene. Michael Eberwein, affectionately known as "Michi" to friends and admirers alike, passed away at the tender age of 62.

Dellnhausen - From His Hometown Roots to the World Stage

Born into a dynasty of folk music legends, in the picturesque town of Dellnhausen, Michael Eberwein was destined for greatness. Growing up surrounded by music, with his grandfather as the family's collective muse, his father, Michl Eberwein, laying the foundation for the Dellnhausen Musicians in 1948, Michael joined the band as a trumpeter in 1979, eventually taking the reins in 1990.

Over the decades, the Dellnhausen Musicians produced an impressive catalog of over 200 recordings for Bavarian Radio and 24 sound carriers. Their unique blend of infectious exuberance, an extensive repertoire, and genre-defying music captivated audiences of all ages, earning them numerous appearances on Bavarian television and tours around the globe.

Countries Visited

Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, Sweden, Indonesia, Japan, China, India, and the USA have all borne witness to the electrifying performances of Michael Eberwein and his bandmates. Their international success can be attributed to their signature style – independent, unapologetic, and perduring.

Awards and Acknowledgment

From the Freising district's Culture Prize to various folk music awards, the Federal Cross of Merit, and Bavaria's Culture Prize in 2019, the accolades poured in for the Dellnhausen Musicians, with Michael Eberwein at the helm.

A Passion for Music in Every Aspect

In 2004, Michael Eberwein founded the Dellnhausen Folk Music Festival, creating an annual gathering of folk music enthusiasts in the thousands. In 2021, the event moved from Au to Wolnzach, a testament to its soaring popularity. The dance band EM Zwo, helmed by Eberwein, also continued the legacy of the "M. Eberwein" orchestra, which played modern dance music for the American occupation and the entertainment of the post-war population.

A Man for His Community

A politician at heart, Michael Eberwein ran for mayor of Au in 2002, falling short to Karl Ecker. However, he served as a council member for six years until 2008. His professional life also saw stints with the city of Freising, most notably as the head of the citizen's office, the registration office, and election supervisor. Freising's mayor, Tobias Eschenbacher, spoke warmly of Eberwein, calling him a "crucial link" and "a very important support" in community affairs.
