In a significant move to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities, Germany and the United States have agreed to deliver a total of five new-generation Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. This agreement was confirmed by Germany's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius during the 29th Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting in July 2025.

The deal involves shipments of advanced US-made Patriot missile systems, capable of detecting and intercepting a wide range of aerial threats, including high-end ballistic missiles used by Russia in its ongoing attacks on Ukraine.

The basis of the agreement was laid during discussions between German Defence Minister Pistorius and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in Washington, and follows earlier announcements by US President Donald Trump about supplying Patriots to Ukraine via NATO, with NATO paying for the systems and distributing them. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz had also expressed Germany’s readiness to purchase US-made Patriot systems specifically to support Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of these systems in countering Russia's missile and drone strikes.

As of early August 2025, Germany has sent two additional Patriot air defense systems, complementing the earlier shipments agreed upon with the US. These new-generation Patriots provide Ukraine with significant capabilities to defend key cities like Kyiv from ballistic missile attacks, offering radar and missile interception coverage up to about 68 kilometers, with capabilities to track multiple targets simultaneously and engage several at once.

The agreement represents a joint US-German commitment to bolster Ukraine’s air defensive capacity by supplying multiple Patriot missile batteries under a coordinated framework involving NATO distribution and cost-sharing strategies.

It is important to note that Russia has been increasing its use of long-range drones in its attacks on Ukraine. In July alone, Russia fired 6,297 long-range drones into Ukraine, the most since the invasion began in February 2022. The delivery of these advanced air defense systems is expected to provide Ukraine with much-needed protection against these relentless attacks.

In a recent statement, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius appealed for quick delivery of further air defense systems following the announcement of increased Russian drone attacks. Germany has also agreed to receive expedited delivery of new-generation Patriot systems from the US Defense Department.

Aside from Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden have expressed willingness to finance Patriot systems under the aforementioned deal. The German military will supply further Patriot components in the next two to three months.

Patriots are made by the American aerospace and defense company Raytheon. These systems are considered one of the most effective on the market for combatting missiles and drones.

On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported 31 deaths and 159 injuries from a Russian air strike in Kyiv the previous day. Just days earlier, Zelensky stated that Ukraine is working to secure funding for 10 Patriot systems as part of a deal with former US President Donald Trump. Tragically, five children, including two-year-olds, were among the dead in the Russian air strike.

This agreement is a significant step towards strengthening Ukraine's air defense capabilities and providing much-needed protection against ongoing Russian attacks. The delivery of these systems is expected to significantly improve Ukraine's ability to defend its cities and its people.
