Delivers Additional Patriot Air Defense Systems to Ukraine by Germany
In a significant move to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities, Germany will deliver two additional Patriot missile launchers to Ukraine in the coming days (early August 2025). This is part of a broader agreement with the United States to provide a total of five Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, agreed upon by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and the US during July 2025.
The initial delivery of two launchers marks the first step, with additional components, including command and radar units, planned to follow soon after. Germany has committed to purchasing these US-made Patriots specifically for Ukraine's use, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasizing the need to support Ukraine’s defense against ongoing bombardments.
The Patriot system includes mobile launchers, command centers, and radar systems capable of detecting and intercepting ballistic missiles, aircraft, and drones, with coverage of approximately 68 kilometers and the ability to track up to 50 targets simultaneously.
The US Department of Defense has reached an agreement with Germany to deliver these newest generation of Patriot systems on an accelerated basis. The condition for Germany's commitment was the US manufacturer delivering the systems as soon as possible. The German Armed Forces plan to deliver these additional system components within the next two to three months.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that the aim is to continue meeting NATO commitments through these deliveries. He also mentioned that Germany had committed to supporting Ukraine with further Patriot systems from the beginning of NATO-level talks. The deliveries aim to add additional Patriot batteries to Ukraine's air defense, with the objective of strengthening Ukraine's defense against Russian missile and drone attacks.
The joint efforts of partners will be affected by short- and medium-term maintenance measures, ensuring the systems are ready for deployment in Ukraine. The agreement was reached during NATO-level talks regarding support for Ukraine, reflecting a united front in the face of the ongoing conflict.
