Deliveries of Patriot military systems potentially commencing for Ukraine

Germany has announced that it will deliver two additional US-made Patriot air defense launchers to Ukraine in the coming days, with further components arriving within two to three weeks [2][3][4][5]. This move is part of Germany's commitment to support Ukraine amid ongoing Russian missile attacks, and the German government has emphasised the urgency of this supply [4].

The Patriot systems Germany plans to deliver are advanced mobile air defense units capable of intercepting aircraft, drones, ballistic, and cruise missiles, covering an area of about 68 kilometers. Their radar can track up to 50 targets at once and engage five simultaneously [1].

The agreement for this delivery involves close coordination with the US, which has authorised the provision of multiple Patriot batteries to Ukraine under President Biden’s administration [1]. Germany is now going into pre-financing to quickly cover the currently very urgent needs of Ukraine, and the ministry has made an appeal to partners to also make further systems available promptly [6].

Chancellor Friedrich Merz previously indicated discussions about buying additional Patriot systems from the US, noting that while the US requires some Patriots for its own use, there is a surplus available [1]. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) confirmed that an assurance from the US side is in place, and he and his US counterpart Pete Hegseth initiated the concrete coordination at a meeting in Washington in mid-July [7].

In addition to the two systems Germany will initially hand over, replacements from the US are expected to follow [5]. This agreed solution is the result of close coordination with the US and NATO partners, and the US will deliver new systems as soon as possible, allowing Germany to continue fulfilling its NATO commitments [8].
