Deliveries of Patriot military equipment to Ukraine could potentially commence
In a coordinated effort to support Ukraine's defense against Russian missile attacks, Germany and the United States have agreed to deliver a total of five US-made Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine.
The announcement was made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who emphasized the importance of this collaboration in international forums. Prior discussions had involved Germany proposing to buy Patriot batteries from the US for Ukraine, with US officials indicating that available systems in Germany and Greece could be financed and sent to Ukraine.
Germany is set to deliver two Patriot launchers imminently, with additional components arriving shortly thereafter. The US, in turn, is providing Patriot batteries as part of the joint effort. This delivery can begin, contingent on the US providing new systems in return.
The German Ministry of Defense is also appealing to partners to make further systems available in a timely manner. The ministry has emphasized that the German Armed Forces will continue to support Ukraine with launchers and further system components in the coming days and within the next two to three months.
Notably, Germany has already delivered three Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine. Initially, Germany will hand over two of its nine Patriots and then receive replacements from the US. The financing for these systems will be provided by Germany.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reported that Russia has used over 5,100 guided bombs, 3,800 combat drones, and almost 260 missiles in air attacks alone in July. A massive attack on Kyiv on Wednesday night resulted in 31 deaths, according to Zelenskyy.
The German Armed Forces will continue to ensure pledged contributions to NATO air defense and the training of the air defense rocket troops of the air force without any restrictions. Germany needs to continue meeting its NATO commitments.
This joint initiative marks a significant intensification in air defense support amidst increasing threats to Ukraine. The highly efficient air defense systems like Patriot are scarce, and the production of some components takes years. The German Ministry of Defense is urging for further systems to be made available promptly to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities.
