India's Indira Gandhi International Airport to Restrict Non-Scheduled Flights on Independence Day

On Independence Day, August 15, the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi will impose temporary restrictions on non-scheduled flights. The restrictions, issued as a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), will prohibit non-scheduled flights from landing or taking off during two specific time windows: 6 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 7 pm.

This NOTAM, issued by the Airports Authority of India's Aeronautical Information Services (AIS), is intended to ensure smooth and secure airspace management during the Independence Day celebrations. Regular scheduled commercial flights will operate normally without any disruptions.

The restrictions apply to non-scheduled flights of scheduled airlines as well as chartered flights. However, there are exemptions for flights operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF), Border Security Force (BSF), Army aviation helicopters, state-owned aircraft flying the Governor or Chief Minister, and flights carrying out quick response missions or medical evacuations.

The IGIA, the country's busiest airport, handles approximately 1,300 flight movements daily. Despite the restrictions, over 150 flights have been delayed or cancelled due to inclement weather. However, the NOTAM restrictions do not apply to flights resuming after a technical glitch, such as United Airlines, which recently resumed operations.

The resumption of operations by United Airlines may have resulted in residual delays, according to the airline's team. Major airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and Spicejet have issued advisories regarding the flight disruptions.

It has been reported that India-China direct passenger flights may resume next month, with Indigo and Air India being asked to be ready. The IGIA, located in the national capital, remains committed to maintaining heightened security and orderly airspace activity during the significant national event of Independence Day in the nation's capital.
