Delays in the upcoming Avengers films by Marvel.
The highly-anticipated Marvel Studios film, Avengers: Doomsday, will now hit theaters on a later date as Disney has announced a delay for its release. Originally set for May 1, 2026, the film is now set to premiere on December 18, 2026.
This delay, along with the sequel Avengers: Secret Wars, is part of a broader schedule adjustment. Secret Wars, originally scheduled for May 2, 2027, has been moved to December 17, 2027.
Iron Man star, Robert Downey Jr, will reprise his role as the villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. This film, as well as Avengers: Secret Wars, is being directed by the Russo Brothers, who helmed the previous two Avengers films—Infinity War and Endgame.
The Russo Brothers' ambitious vision for the films may be the reason for the delay, although no specific production issues were cited. The strategic move aims to give the filmmakers more time to perfect their vision and to optimize the releases for the successful holiday season.
Subsequent Marvel films, such as Thor and Black Panther sequels, as well as Eternals and Thunderbolts, have been divisive since the success of Endgame in 2019. The next Marvel offering before Avengers: Doomsday is The Fantastic Four: First Steps, slated for July. It will compete with a new Superman film from DC in the same release window.
