Rostock Bid for Olympics Postponed: Rostock's OB Pushes Decision on Olympic Bid till July

Here's the scoop:

Rostock's Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger (Left) has unexpectedly postponed a decision regarding the city's bid for the Olympics in the council meeting. The decision was set to happen during a council session that commenced on the same day but was pushed back until the council's next meeting on July 23rd.

Why the hold-up? Kröger explained in a letter to council members that "regardless of whether the council's decision on this matter occurs in June or July 2025, it's primarily about sending a critical signal. However, such a signal requires thorough preparation. There are valid questions that cannot be answered in full until the current session."

SPD and Greens demand citizen vote

It was previously disclosed that SPD and Greens, in a joint motion, requested a public vote on the Olympic bid question. Additionally, a motion calling for an outright rejection of Rostock as an auxiliary location for 2036 was proposed, as this year marks the 100th anniversary of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, during which the Nazis were in power.

By the end of May, four German cities and regions had submitted their applications to the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) for hosting the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Olympics. The final decision on a German bid concept should be made no later than autumn 2026. Interest in Rostock and Warnemünde from multiple bidders has been reported by the city administration.

Two unsuccessful attempts

"Rostock with the sailing grounds near Warnemünde is highly suitable to host Olympic sailing competitions. Furthermore, numerous other Olympic sports such as football at the Ostseestadion, handball, basketball, and volleyball, as well as Goalball can be offered in the existing arenas at the cityHalle or HanseMesse," stated the withdrawn resolution.

All previous attempts to bring Olympic events to Warnemünde have failed. During the unsuccessful Olympic bids of Berlin in 2000 and Leipzig in 2012, Warnemünde was a strong contender for host of the sailing events.

(Side note: It's worth mentioning that, according to recent data, Rostock does not seem to be actively pursuing or officially considered as a host city for the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Olympics. The ongoing German bids for future Summer Olympics are centered on Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and the Rhine-Ruhr region with no mention of Rostock in their official communications.)

  • Berlin

In light of the delayed decision for Rostock's Olympic bid, many are questioning the city's ongoing commitment to the bid, as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and the Rhine-Ruhr region are the official centers of the ongoing German bids for the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Olympics. With Rostock's city council postponing the decision until July, it remains unclear if the city's employment policy will prioritize preparations for the Olympics or continue focusing on other sectors like sports in Warnemünde.
