Delay in Ministerial-Level Discussions Regarding Ukraine Held in London

Heads are set to talk, but tensions run high

negotiations regarding Ukraine's territory are brewing, with key players discussing potential concessions behind closed doors. Rearranging the political landscape, high-ranking officials from the UK, France, Germany, the US, and Ukraine are set to engage in talks, as reported by Sky News.

Specifically, US President's special representative for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, will represent Washington in these sensitive discussions. To be precise, the meeting in London on April 23 was meant to discuss the US proposal about recognizing Crimea as Russian territory. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky swiftly nixed this idea on April 22, considering it unconstitutional. Moreover, sources among European diplomats concur that the EU fiercely opposes any recognition of Crimea as Russian territory.

Amidst this commotion, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called off his trip to London, as reported by The New York Times. Semi-publicly, Marco Rubio announced anticipation for his visit to the UK later on, while the foreign ministers of France and Germany, Jean-Yves Le Drian and Heiko Maas, did the same, as per Sky News reports.

Furthermore, US President's special envoy Steve Biegun followed suit in canceling his trip to London. According to Financial Times, Biegun's decision significantly diminishes the importance of this meeting, as he also intends to visit Russia this week, as reported on April 22 by assistant to Russian President Yuri Ushakov. In due course, the White House clarified that Biegun plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin—a fourth visit for the special representative.

In a slightly different turn of events, on April 18, sources from Bloomberg revealed that the US proposed to allies the easing of sanctions against Russia if the truce in Ukraine holds. Included in a list of proposed solutions presented at negotiations in Paris, this measure was suggested as part of the conflict resolution for Ukraine. The US is also open to discussions about Ukraine's NATO membership and the preservation of territories occupied by Russia, as per Bloomberg sources.

To tread carefully in such delicate matters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized caution regarding "anonymized information leaks," advising against public discourse in the negotiation process [1][2][3].

Note: Ukraine continues to strive for its territorial integrity and does not recognize Russian occupation, as per its constitution. Amidst ongoing negotiations, the US recently proposed recognition of Crimea as Russian territory. However, this proposal has sparked considerable concerns among Ukrainian officials due to its perceived bias toward Russia's interests.
