DEL2 reshapes relegation playoffs with earlier survival showdown for Kaufbeuren

The DEL2 league has adjusted its relegation playoff schedule for the 2024–25 season. Kaufbeuren's ESV will begin its survival battle earlier than planned, facing Weiden in a best-of-six series. The change comes as the league reduces the number of teams in the second relegation round from eight to two.

The second relegation round was originally set to include eight teams in April 2025. Under the usual format, the four lowest-ranked sides from the regular season (11th to 14th) would meet the four winners of the first relegation round. This year, however, only two teams will compete.

The first match of the revised playoff will take place on March 27. Kaufbeuren's ESV will host Weiden in a best-of-six series. Kaufbeuren must win four games to stay in the league, while Weiden needs just three victories to secure promotion.

The shortened playoff means Kaufbeuren's fight for survival starts sooner. A win in the series will keep them in DEL2 for another season. A loss would see them replaced by Weiden in the league.
