Defiled resting place of notable Belgian Jewish Liberal figure discovered
In a shocking turn of events, the grave of Jean Gol, a prominent Jewish Liberal statesman in Belgium, was desecrated during a violent protest by pro-Palestinian activists. The incident took place during a commemorative event at the University of Liege marking the 30th anniversary of Gol's death.
The vandalism, which included defacing Gol's tombstone with 'Never Again' and 'Hé Merde' (Oh Sh*t), was strongly condemned by various political figures. Prime Minister Bart De Wever described the act as 'an insult to democracy,' while Interior Minister Bernard Quintin labelled it as 'an insult to the memory of the late politician.'
Deborah Gol, the daughter of the late politician, wanted to clean the grave in light of the remembrance event. She believes the vandalism was inspired by the ongoing war in Gaza and the MR's stance on it. In response, she filed a complaint with the police, and the city of Liege took the initiative to clean the tombstone.
The incident led to a larger protest, with around 400 protesters blocking streets in Liege. As a result, the party's president, Georges-Louis Bouchez, was forced to enter the university premises through a side entrance. Members of the MR party were physically assaulted, insulted, spat at, and had objects thrown at them during the protest. A female member from the party's youth division reported that her jacket was tagged with a swastika.
The MR party, along with the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats (Open VLD) parties, has spoken out against the behavior of the protesters, condemning the act as disrespectful and demanding respect for the memory of the late politician. Other parties have also expressed disapproval, calling for calm and respect for private sites.
President of the MR Georges-Louis Bouchez expressed indignation over the desecration of Gol's tomb and accused the Left of holding a 'monopoly on violence.' He criticised his political opponents for what he said was their failure to respond adequately to the attack on him and his party.
The Belgian Royal Palace also expressed indignation about the reprehensible act and offered support to Gol's daughter. A large police presence in riot gear was needed to protect the MR party members, resulting in twelve police officers being injured, including five seriously.
The incident has sparked a nationwide debate about freedom of speech, respect for private sites, and the appropriate ways to express political dissent.
