Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have taken a significant step towards strengthening their security relationship, with the signing of the Pakistan-Saudi Arabia Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement on September 17, 2022.

The agreement, signed during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's state visit to Riyadh, was welcomed by both nations. According to Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, any attack on either Pakistan or Saudi Arabia will be considered an attack on both, and they will respond jointly.

The pact, which was signed at Al-Yamamah Palace, where Prime Minister Sharif was received by Crown Prince and PM Mohammed bin Salman, aims to develop aspects of defense cooperation between the two countries and strengthen joint deterrence against any aggression.

The agreement pledges to treat any aggression against one country as aggression against both, with the aim of enhancing security and achieving peace in the region and the world. This joint response is a reflection of the strong bonds between the two nations, as stated by Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar.

The signing of the pact formalized informal beliefs among the government and people of Pakistan regarding the security of Saudi Arabia, especially the protection of Haramain Sharifain. This shared commitment is not limited to the current agreement, as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated that several countries have expressed interest in pursuing similar defense agreements with Pakistan, following its pact with Saudi Arabia.

The Pakistan-Saudi Arabia agreement is a significant development in the security relationship between the two countries, and experts have described it as a "historic and unprecedented development". The agreement was made possible by the success of Pakistan's recent foreign policy, as stated by Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar, who also noted that the country's foreign policy has been progressing successfully for the past one and a half years.

The recent strike by Israel against Qatar, targeting Hamas leaders in Doha, sparked outrage among Muslim nations and world leaders alike. This event, among others, may have contributed to the strengthening of the Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relationship, as the agreement was signed following a series of such events.

Saudi Arabia provided support to Pakistan during the international crisis and the recent economic crisis, and the Pakistan-Saudi Arabia agreement is a testament to the strong ties between the two nations. The deputy prime minister expressed satisfaction with the agreement, stating that both Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are satisfied with the agreement.

The door has not been closed on the possibility of other countries joining the Pakistan-Saudi Arabia security pact, according to Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. While it is premature to discuss other countries joining, this possibility reflects the broader implications of the agreement and the potential for further strengthening of regional security.
