Military Forces of Germany Should Embrace a Central Role in Society, Claims Pistorius - Defense Force Placement at Society's Heart: Pistorius' Perspective
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has underscored the members of the Bundeswehr as integral to German society and guarantors of peace and security in the nation and Europe. "They belong in the heart of society," Pistorius said during the first Veteran's Day at a promotion ceremony in Hamburg.
Accompanied by Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher (both SPD), Pistorius participated in the ceremonial event on the town hall square, where around 400 soldier cadets of the University of the Bundeswehr were advanced to officers.
Pistorius warns of challenging times ahead
The coming years will be "ruffled, politically, socially, and militarily," Pistorius stated. "We reside in a time of global chaos." The European model of freedom, democracy, and prosperity in peace is under duress. Ensuring peace, security, and stability necessitates "deployable armed forces."
Given the situation in the Ukraine, Pistorius expressed skepticism: "Putin's troops are attacking people, cities, and infrastructure in a manner seldom seen since the outbreak of war." The hope for a peace treaty has proved false. "At the moment, Putin doesn't want peace," he said.
Tschentscher advocates for civil-military cooperation
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, "the Bundeswehr and its soldiers have become more conspicuous in the realm of politics and public consciousness," said Hamburg's First Mayor Tschentscher. The significance of crisis resilience and Germany's defense capability against external and internal attacks has become apparent. "To engage that, we require a robust Bundeswehr and effective civil-military cooperation."
The people of Hamburg have firsthand experience of the Bundeswehr: "They are by our side and lend a hand when the city is in need." The mayor cited examples such as the storm flood disaster in 1962, the refugee crisis in 2015, the corona pandemic, and numerous smaller situations. "Every day they deploy helicopters and maintain the rescue center at the Bundeswehr hospital in Wandsbek."
Left-wing groups protest in opposition
Germany's Bundestag named June 15 as Veteran's Day last year. In the subsequent years, the day will be celebrated annually on the weekend before or after this date.
A veteran in Germany is any individual who has served in the military, either actively or previously, as long as they have left the service honorably. Approximately ten million Germans have served in the military, or been professional or conscript soldiers. Roughly 500,000 individuals have been deployed abroad, including missions in Afghanistan, Mali, or Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Several left-wing groups demonstrated against the public appeal of the Bundeswehr on the town hall square during the event. Left Party factions in the Hamburg Parliament led these calls for protest. According to police reports, around 205 people participated in three demonstrations. Despite the protests, everything proceeded peacefully, as per reports.
The police cordoned off the town hall square due to the demonstrations, granting access only to invited guests and relatives of the officer cadets.
