After spending three seasons with the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, defensive end Preston Smith is back with the Washington Commanders. The team announced on Wednesday that they had signed Smith as a free agent.

Smith, who was previously selected by the Commanders in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft, has had a successful career so far. He has played in a total of 163 games (138 starts), recording 443 tackles (74 for loss), 70.5 sacks, and five interceptions. Two of his seven career fumble recoveries were taken to the endzone for touchdowns.

In the 2021 season, Smith made 32 tackles and registered 4.5 sacks in 17 games (nine starts) with the Packers.

Unfortunately, the Commanders' defensive line has taken a hit with the injury of Deatrich Wise Jr. Wise, a free-agent signee, tore his left quadriceps during the loss at Green Bay on Sunday and will likely be out for the rest of the season. He has been placed on IR.

The team also lost cornerback Jonathan Jones to injury, as he was put on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury. Jones will miss a minimum of four games.

Before rejoining the Commanders, Smith spent his first four seasons with the team, followed by a stint with the Packers from 2019 to 2023, and a brief period with the Steelers in 2024. He was traded from the Packers to the Steelers during the 2024 season, but was later released by the Steelers in February.

With the addition of Smith, the Commanders aim to strengthen their defensive line and improve their chances for the rest of the season.
