Russia's Security Council secretary, Sergei Shoigu, is back in Pyongyang for another round of talks with North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un. According to Russian state news agency Interfax, the discussions are underway, but the specifics remain a mystery. However, Shoigu revealed that 1,000 North Korean pioneers will be dispatched to the border region of Kursk, Russia.

Among the 1,000 pioneers, 5,000 military construction workers will arrive to help with the post-conflict reconstruction. Shoigu also hinted at the potential resumption of air travel between the two nations, which has been in suspended animation for over 3 decades. Previously, Shoigu had met with Kim in Pyongyang on March 21 and June 4, followed by them signing a strategic partnership treaty including a defense pact last year.

The focus on Kursk stems from the recent escalation in the Ukraine conflict, with Kim reportedly pledging "unconditional support" to Putin during Shoigu's previous visit to Pyongyang in late June. Kim expressed hope for Russia's victory in the Ukraine war and agreed to support Moscow's position on international political issues, including Ukraine.

With the increase in military and political ties between Russia and North Korea, the latter has also been rumored to provide Russia with arms and ammunition. The 1,000 North Korean pioneers are expected to aid Russia's reconstruction efforts, clear mines from the conflict-torn regions, and assist in building war memorials. This deployment can be seen as an active demonstration of North Korea's role as a faithful ally to Russia in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
