In a surprising turn of events, Anu Mohindru, the former chair of Essex County Cricket Club, has been suspended pending an appeal, following allegations of academic fraud. The suspension comes after Mohindru was found to have misled an interview panel at 23 Essex Street Chambers in 2013, claiming to have studied at Oxford University.

Mohindru, who stepped down from his position at Essex County Cricket Club in May 2022, was ordered to pay nearly £55,000 in costs by the disciplinary panel. His barrister, Mark Harries KC, acknowledged that Mohindru had made a "gross error of judgement which had come back to haunt him." However, Mohindru denies knowingly providing false information.

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has stated that Mohindru deliberately exaggerated his academic achievements and qualifications. Investigations revealed that a CV sent by Mohindru detailed his medical studies at Oxford University from 1993 to 1994, but inquiries made by Oxford University found no record of Mohindru as a student.

This is not the first time Mohindru has faced professional misconduct allegations. Three years earlier, in 2015, he appeared in the trial of three men who were charged with people smuggling after 35 people from Afghanistan were found in a container at Tilbury docks. However, a second professional misconduct allegation that Mohindru falsely claimed to have qualified as a medical doctor was dismissed.

Meanwhile, Jason Gallian is set to take over as interim chair of Essex County Cricket club. The club released a statement on Tuesday, September 16, confirming that Mohindru had stepped down as club chair.

In a separate event, Australia Test spinner notched a match-winning fifty from No.10 in the record One-Day Cup stand, a development that has been making waves in the cricket world. However, it is not related to the main topic of this article.
