Defending Remark on Second-Season Trophy by Postecoglou after North London Derby Loss

Tottenham Hotspur Struggle in Premier League, Aim for Carabao Cup Glory

Tottenham Hotspur find themselves in a challenging position in the Premier League this season, currently sitting in 13th place with just four points (W1 D1 L2) – their fewest at this stage since 2015-16.

In contrast, Brentford, who advanced to the next round of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 victory over Leyton Orient, are aiming high. Their goalkeeper, Mark Flekken, has made 22 saves in four Premier League matches this season, the most of any goalkeeper, and Fabio Carvalho scored a goal and provided two assists in their Carabao Cup match.

The teams' recent Premier League meetings have been closely contested, with the team scoring first failing to win any of the last four encounters (D2 L2). Brentford have won just one of their six meetings with Tottenham Hotspur (D3 L2).

Ange Postecoglou, the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, has been defending his comments about winning trophies in his second season. Despite the team's current league position, Postecoglou remains confident that he can lead Tottenham Hotspur to a trophy this season.

However, predictions for Tottenham's second season under the successor Thomas Frank suggest they will improve but not yet contend for the Premier League title. The consensus forecasts Tottenham finishing around 5th or within the top six, with no expectation of a major trophy in that second season.

Postecoglou's defensive record in set-piece situations is a concern, with 25 set-piece goals conceded since the start of last season, only Nottingham Forest have conceded more in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Brentford's Pedro Porro has created more open play chances in the Premier League this season than any other player (10).

Thomas Frank, the coach of Brentford, expressed satisfaction with his team's performance and emphasized the need to maintain their level in the league. According to Opta, Tottenham have a win probability of 58.8% for their upcoming match against Brentford, while the probability of a draw is 20.5% and a win for Brentford is 20.6%.

Despite the challenges, Postecoglou led Tottenham Hotspur to win a European trophy (Europa League) in his first season (2024/25), despite a poor 17th-place league finish. However, predictions for Tottenham's second season (2025/26) under the successor Thomas Frank suggest they will improve but not yet contend for the Premier League title. The consensus forecasts Tottenham finishing around 5th or within the top six, with no expectation of a major trophy in that second season.
