Defending champions advance in the US Open mixed doubles semi-finals of the restructured tournament

The 2024 US Open has seen a significant transformation in its mixed doubles tournament, as the United States Tennis Association (UTA) introduced a revamped million-dollar prize pool and several rule changes.

One of the most notable changes is the reduction of sets from six or seven games to four games. This shift has been met with criticism from traditionalists and doubles specialists, including Errani and Vavassori, who argue that the changes reduce the mixed doubles tournament to virtually a series of exhibition matches.

Despite the controversy, the tournament has provided some thrilling moments. In the last-16, the all-American duo of Collins and Harrison eliminated Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic in a closely contested match. The "advantage point" was scrapped in a game where both teams were at deuce, adding an extra layer of excitement to the match.

The semi-finals of the tournament will see Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison face Errani and Vavassori, who won the 2024 title at the US Open Billie Jean King Tennis Centre in New York. If they manage to win this year, Errani and Vavassori will each receive $500,000, a significant increase from the $100,000 they received last year.

The other semi-final will feature Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud against Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper. Swiatek and Ruud, who have been in fine form this year, will be looking to continue their winning streak and secure a spot in the final.

The field of teams was cut from 32 to 16, and the tournament was moved to the week when the qualifiers for the men's and women's singles draws are played. This decision has ensured that the mixed doubles tournament receives the attention it deserves, with the second match played in a packed stadium.

Taylor Townsend and Ben Shelton were defeated by Errani and Vavassori in the quarter-final, setting the stage for an exciting semi-final matchup. The final will undoubtedly be a spectacle, with two strong pairs battling it out for the prestigious US Open title and the hefty prize money.

The mixed doubles tournament at the 2024 US Open has certainly lived up to expectations, providing fans with a thrilling display of tennis. With the changes and the increased prize money, the tournament is set to attract even more top players in the years to come.
