Shuffling the Deck at the Ministry of Defense: Pistorius Welcomes Another State Secretary

Defence Minister Pistorius Secures Another State Secretary Appointee

Get ready for some changes at the Ministry of Defense! Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, in agreement with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, is restructuring the upper echelons of his department. And guess what? There's a new position on the horizon.

Enter, Jan Stoess, the 51-year-old legal eagle set to assume the third State Secretary role, as announced by none other than the Ministry of Defense. With the backing of Chancellor Merz and Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil, this expansion couldn't be clearer.

But wait, there's more! Jens Plötner, the foreign policy advisor to Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, is jumping ship and swinging into action as State Secretary for Armament and Innovation in the Ministry of Defense. With this move, Plötner, aged 57, will be replacing the previous State Secretary Benedikt Zimmer, and the goal? To accelerate procurement and push forward key European armament projects.

Stoess, a powerhouse lawyer, has been helming the Department of Law and Organization within the ministry up until now. From 2012 to 2016, he served as the chairman of the Berlin SPD, paving the way for the later Governing Mayor, Michael Müller, to take his place in the Berlin Senate Chancellery. Müller also made off with the reins of the SPD state chairman from Stoess. Since March 2022, he's been busy in the defense department. The ministry justifies Stoess's new appointment due to the substantial increase in tasks and the tighter deadlines brought on by the evolving security policy situation.

Remember when Chancellor Merz threatened a hiring freeze for the public service, specifically for federal ministries, last fall? Well, it seems he's had a change of heart. With the history of appointment changes during his tenure, Merz's government now boasts a record number of top positions in reunified Germany - and one more ministry than under the traffic light government.
