Dropped his libel lawsuit - Defamation lawsuit dismissed by the judge

A wild rodeo is unfolding in the courtroom as Judge Lewis Liman tosses out Justin Baldoni's defamation lawsuit against Blake Lively and her hubby, Ryan Reynolds. You guessed it! The big wig's case crashed and burned due to the lack of convincing evidence to back his claims.

Baldoni was gunning for a hefty $400 million, aiming to strike Lively for her public accusation of sexual harassment. But Judge Liman brushed off Baldoni's gripes, announcing that Lively's statements were legally protected and, thus, immune to his lawsuit. The judge showed no mercy, shutting down other accusations, including the allegation of blackmail, except for a miniscule point that allows Baldoni the chance to resubmit a lawsuit concerning "unjustified contract interference."

According to Lively's legal eagles, this is a total win for their client: "Judge Liman's decision is the complete victory and complete vindication of Blake Lively and everyone who was dragged into Justin Baldoni's and Wayfarer's vindictive lawsuit. We're now exploring the possibility of seeking recompense for legal fees and damages, including punitive damages, against Baldoni and others involved."

Remember when Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni back in December 2024? She accused him of sexual harassment and retaliation on the set of the film "Just Once More" (originally dubbed "It Ends With Us"). Lively claims that Baldoni and the Wayfarer Studios crew launched a devious smear campaign after her complaint.

Sayonara to the "New York Times" lawsuit

Baldoni also had beef with the "New York Times," but guess what? Judge Liman didn't find any solid grounds to lawyer up over a defamation lawsuit. The newspaper's reporting was shielded by the "Fair Report Privilege," a cool legal move that lets media report on ongoing or filed court cases without fear of tarnishing someone's rep.

The "New York Times" spokesperson chimed in: "We're chuffed the court recognized the lawsuit against the 'New York Times' for what it was: a baseless move to smother honest reporting. Our journalists have approached the story with care and fairness."

Gotcha under California law

In his well-detailed decision, Judge Liman pointed out that Lively's initial accusations against Baldoni were made in an official complaint submitted to the California Civil Rights Bureau. This falls under the "Litigation Privilege," which means those statements are off-limits in defamation lawsuits.

Similarly, Ryan Reynolds' portrayal of Baldoni as a "sexual predator" and his spokesperson, Leslie Sloane's statements to the media were also protected under this jurisdiction, as they relied on Lively's interpretation of events.

Looking Ahead: Lively vs. Baldoni Trials Set for 2026

Mark your calendars, people! A trial in Blake Lively's lawsuit against Justin Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios is slated for March 2026. We'll have to wait and see whether Baldoni attempts to revamp his allegations by then or if he's ready to put this chapter to rest for good.
