Hailing from Halbau in Silesia, now Ilowa in Poland, Lehmann pursued his passion for photography and graphic arts post-schooling in Leipzig. His career trajectory took a dramatic turn in 1955 with his relocation to Potsdam-Babelsberg to attend the German Academy of Film Art. He excelled in its camera department, graduating in 1959.
