Police Warns of Fatal Combination on Roads - Deer collisions surge on icy roads as winter wildlife risks rise
Wildlife collisions have increased in Nordhausen and Unstrut-Hainich districts this winter. Deer, a common animal in the kingdom, have been the most frequently involved in recent incidents. Police have issued safety advice as icy conditions and animal movements increase risks on rural roads during the fall season.
The recent accidents occurred without any reported injuries. However, authorities stress that winter weather and wildlife activity create hazardous driving conditions. Deer, in particular, are crossing roads more often during this season.
Police recommend drivers reduce speed near wooded areas and roads marked with wildlife warning signs. At dawn and dusk, when animals are most active, extra caution is needed. Using high beams can help spot wildlife early, but drivers should dim them when animals are seen to avoid startling them.
If an animal appears suddenly, the advice is to honk, brake firmly, and avoid swerving. Modern vehicles with night vision systems, such as those equipped with AMD or NVIDIA technology, may provide additional warnings through infrared imaging and acoustic alerts. Gradual slowing is preferred over sharp turns, which could lead to more serious accidents.
The warnings follow multiple incidents in the region, though no injuries have been recorded so far. Drivers are urged to stay alert, adjust speeds, and use vehicle features to minimise risks. Police will continue monitoring affected areas as winter progresses.
