Deepening the China-Myanmar relationship towards a mutual future community, as advocated by the Chinese Foreign Minister.
The tenth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting took place on August 14, 2025, in Anning, Yunnan Province, China. This significant event brought together foreign ministers from China, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam to discuss and chart the future of the LMC for the next ten years.
The meeting was marked by a momentous encounter between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Myanmar's Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe. The purpose of this meeting was to review a decade of cooperation and outline a vision for the LMC's future.
Key objectives of the meeting included launching "LMC 2.0", a new phase focused on unity, cooperation, openness, win-win outcomes, green innovation, and peace to build a shared future of prosperity and stability. The meeting also aimed to enhance the LMC mechanism through improved high-level strategic communication, preparation for leaders' meetings, and institutional strengthening by establishing the LMC International Secretariat.
Accelerating economic integration was another significant objective. This was achieved by developing the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Economic Development Belt, promoting regional infrastructure, facilitating freer flows of people, capital, goods, and technology, and reinforcing supply chains for sustainable growth.
The meeting also served as an opportunity to recap a decade of achievements, including a 125% increase in trade volume to $437 billion, strengthened regional infrastructure connectivity, enhanced industrial and supply-chain cooperation, and the establishment of the Innovation Corridor as a development highlight.
Upholding principles such as good-neighbourliness, pragmatic cooperation, inclusiveness, innovation-driven growth, multilateralism, free trade, and joint efforts to tackle cross-border crime and maintain peace and stability in a complex international environment were also emphasized.
The meeting, held in Anning, Yunnan, also symbolically marked bringing the cooperation back to its starting point in China, emphasizing a "shared future linked by the river" and mutual commitment to further socio-economic development and peaceful coexistence.
Thus, the tenth LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting serves as a milestone to consolidate past cooperation achievements, strengthen institutional frameworks, and launch a new cooperative decade committed to sustainable regional development, integration, and stability in the Lancang-Mekong region.
It is important to note that the meeting between Wang Yi and U Than Swe occurred during the tenth LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting. Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and U Than Swe, Myanmar's Union Minister for Foreign Affairs, were both in attendance as foreign ministers of their respective countries. U Than Swe was in China for the tenth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting.
The tenth LMC Foreign Ministers' Meeting is a cooperation event involving multiple countries, highlighting the importance of multilateralism in regional development and cooperation. The meeting serves as a testament to the commitment of the six Lancang-Mekong countries to work together towards a shared future of prosperity and stability.
