Deep three-point shots propel Liberty to a 105-97 victory against Sparks
New York Liberty Secure Impressive 105-97 Victory over Los Angeles Sparks
The New York Liberty secured a thrilling 105-97 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday night, thanks to exceptional three-point shooting and clutch plays late in the game.
The Liberty's three-point prowess was on full display, as they made a season-high 14 three-pointers – the most by any Los Angeles opponent this season. This impressive display from beyond the arc helped them reach a season-high point total.
Emma Meesseman led the team offensively, scoring a season-high 24 points. Her strong performance included impressive scoring in the paint and overall leadership on the court. Jonquel Jones also had a significant impact, scoring 21 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Jones contributed both from downtown and inside, making four out of five three-point attempts.
Clutch plays late in the game sealed the win for the Liberty. Natasha Cloud's back-to-back layups extended their lead to 96-85, while crucial baskets by Sabrina Ionescu and Cloud in the final minutes ensured the victory.
The Sparks tried to mount a comeback, but the Liberty managed to maintain a lead that was never less than one possession. Leonie Fiebich scored 10 points in the third quarter, including two three-point shots, to maintain the Liberty's advantage.
Sabrina Ionescu extended the Liberty's lead with a three-point shot in the second quarter, and Rae Burrell came off the bench to score six points in the second quarter for the Liberty.
Despite strong performances from Kelsey Plum (26 points) and Dearica Hamby (21 points) for the Sparks, the Liberty's efficient shooting and timely scoring runs made the difference. However, the Liberty allowed the Sparks to score 15 fast-break points in the game, partly due to their 12 turnovers, which have been a persistent issue for them throughout the season.
The Liberty held the Sparks to just 14 points in the second quarter, and neither team scored any points in the final minute of the second quarter. All but one of Meesseman's shots in the first quarter were assisted, with the exception being a put-back at the buzzer.
In the end, the Liberty's exceptional three-point shooting and clutch plays in the final minutes proved to be the key factors in their impressive 105-97 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks.
