Tragic Turn in Munich's Apollo of Football
Deep Sorrow: Traffic-Related Fatalincident Concerning Football Enthusiast during Nations League Championship
Munich (dpa) - A spectator's demise during the exhilarating Nations League final between Portugal and Spain in Munich's stadium left the crowd stunned and hearts heavy. Amidst the fervor, a man fell from the gallery tier onto a staircase in the lower tier, during the game on Sunday night.
The police are treating the incident as an accident. They have pored over footage from the venue, finding no indication of foul play. Investigations continue.
Stunned, the coaches from both finalists along with the German Football Association (DFB) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), shared in the grief. "We're heartbroken at the loss. The news casts a dark shadow," remarked Portugal's head coach Roberto Martínez.
In response, Spain's coach Luis de la Fuente began his post-match press conference expressing his sympathies: "Before any questions, let me extend my heartfelt condolences to the family. A fan tragically perished in the stands tonight."
Condolences Flood In
The DFB expressed its sympathies to the family on the X platform, stating, "Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the football enthusiast who perished." The UEFA too echoed similar sentiments in their statement, offering support during this challenging time.
FC Bayern, the star athletes, expressed remorse on X, stating, "Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and relatives of the deceased fan."
The fallen spectator hailed from the region of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, as per police reports. The reports confirmed that the spectator had passed away on the scene. Despite valiant efforts from rescue services, the individual succumbed to injuries after midnight, according to UEFA.
Felix Kroos, a TV pundit present at the match, relayed the dramatic incident. "It happened within arm's reach. We were engrossed in the game and didn't hear a thing. I noticed a loud impact diagonally behind me. When the ruckus started, I turned around to witness a shoe roll by and glimpse a foot," he shared with "Bild".
Witness Accounts
Sieging paramedics, stewards, and law enforcement officers hastily rushed to the location where the spectator had tumbled during the game. Shock-struck eyewitnesses pleaded for more medical assistance. The area was draped with a tarpaulin for privacy while doctors fought passionately to save the fan's life.
During extra time, the star-studded Portugal and Spain teams remained oblivious of the crisis unfolding. The same held true for the trophy presentation ceremony for Cristiano Ronaldo's side. In a nail-biting contest, Portugal clinched the final by securing a 5:3 victory in the penalty shootout (2:2, 2:2, 1:2).
