The EU border agency Frontex has disclosed a 20% decline in unauthorized entries into Europe during the initial five months of the present year, contrasting the same period in the preceding year. Since January, a total of 63,700 such border violations have been spotlighted, according to the agency headquartered in Warsaw, declared on Wednesday. The trio of nations – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Mali – dominated the migrants' origins.

Crossing Crash Rates by Region

The most dramatic fall in unauthorized border crossings, as per the report, occurred in the Western Balkans (dropping 65%), followed by West Africa (dropping 35%) and Eastern Mediterranean (declining 30%). In addition to this, the number of individuals breaching Poland's and the Baltic states' boundaries from Belarus fell by 7%.

However, Frontex reported a 7% escalation in the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean, bound for Italy. Furthermore, the number of individuals trying to illegally enter the UK via the English Channel has increased by 17%, amounting to 25,540. Smuggling rings in the area are undergoing modifications, as explained by Frontex, with some using multiple boats simultaneously to amplify successful crossings.

Despite these declines, Frontex reported a 38% slump in total illegal border crossings in 2020, bringing the count down to 239,000, following a ten-year peak in 2023.

  • In 2021, there was a 60% increase in detected irregular border crossings compared to 2020, amounting to 199,900 incidents[2].
  • The rise was seen across various routes, particularly the central Mediterranean – a prominent path for migrants hailing from Tunisia and Bangladesh[4].
  • The increase could be partly attributed to the relaxation of COVID-19 travel restrictions, which facilitated greater mobility[4].
  1. It's crucial to consider the impact of the employment policies in various communities as they could potentially influence the decisions of individuals choosing to emigrate, given the significant decline in unauthorized Europe border crossings seen this year.
  2. The general-news landscape should pay attention to the politics surrounding migration and employment, as the rise in detected irregular border crossings, especially in the central Mediterranean, indicates a complex interplay of factors driving this trend.
