Taiwan Experiences 19th Consecutive Month of Population Decline

Taiwan's population has continued to decline, with the latest figures showing a drop of approximately 8,805 people in July 2025, bringing the total population to around 23.34 million. This marks the 19th consecutive month of population decrease [1][3][4].

The primary reasons for this decline are a persistently low birth rate, an aging population, and net migration losses. In the first seven months of 2025, only 64,314 babies were born, nearly 10,000 fewer than the same period last year. In July alone, there were 8,939 births, a decrease of 1,485 from July 2024 [1][3][4].

The high death rate also contributes to the population decline. In July 2025, deaths numbered 16,846, corresponding to a crude death rate of 8.5 per 1,000 people [1][3].

Taiwan's population is becoming increasingly aged. Residents aged 65 and older number about 4.58 million, constituting nearly 20% (19.64%) of the population, indicative of a "super-aged" society [1][2][4].

Migration patterns also play a role in Taiwan's population decline. In July, 70,410 people immigrated to Taiwan, but 71,308 emigrated, resulting in a net migration loss [4].

Regarding regional growth rates, the highest population increases were recorded in Taoyuan, Hsinchu County, and Taichung. On the other hand, the regions with the steepest population declines were the island counties of Kinmen and Lienchiang, and Taipei City [4].

Projections indicate that Taiwan's population, which peaked at about 23.6 million in 2019, is expected to fall below 23 million as early as 2030 if current trends continue [1][2][3]. This demographic shift poses significant challenges for Taiwan's economy and social welfare systems.

In terms of monthly trends, there were 292 more deaths last month compared to the previous month, and the crude birthrate last month was 4.51 per 1,000. The number of deaths last month was 1,856 more than in July last year, while the number of babies born last month was 1,485 fewer than the same month last year [1][3].

The number of babies born in specific months this year includes: - January: 9,495 - February: 10,407 - March: 9,388 - April: 8,684 - May: 8,433 - June: 8,968 - Last month (July): 8,939

As of the end of last month, 64,314 babies have been born this year.

The population decline in Taiwan, as demonstrated by the 19th consecutive monthly decrease in July 2025, is a matter of general-news interest. This decline is attributed to factors such as low birth rates, an aging population, and net migration losses, as well as a high death rate and outward migration. In politics and policy discussions, this trend is significant as it presents challenges to Taiwan's economy and social welfare systems, and raises concerns about the future population size, potentially falling below 23 million by 2030.
