Crime against refugees and refugee shelters in Brandenburg significantly dropped in the first quarter of the year. According to SPD state parliamentarian Andreas Noack's query, there were 42 instances of Crime, a stark decrease from 87 in the same period last year.

The decrease includes various transgressions, such as harassment, threats, propaganda crimes, property damage, arson, and physical assaults. Property crimes like vandalism and theft remain persistent issues.

MP Noack rightly points out that despite the reduced numbers, each incident stands as a grave infringement on human rights. The lower refugee intake in Brandenburg is also a crucial factor to consider.

Rising Right-Wing Extremism Concerns

Noack's concerns regarding the high number of right-wing extremist-related crimes in Brandenburg are valid. The state government's response to a minor request indicates that 796 crimes within the "Politically Motivated Crime - Right" category were registered in the first quarter of 2025.

The majority of these offenses consist of propaganda material dissemination, symbol usage, incitement, and insults. Violent right-wing acts totaled 19 in the first quarter, including one case under the scrutiny of the Federal Prosecutor General, concerning a suspected right-wing extremist terrorist cell in Altdöbern, Oberspreewald-Lausitz.

Ongoing Issues and Acts of Violence

Recent incidents such as anti-Semitic attacks in Oranienburg (Oberhavel), assaults in Bad Saarow (Oder-Spree district), and stone-throwing at the alternative youth club in Senftenberg (Oberspreewald-Lausitz district) undeniably show that hateful sentiments are still widespread.

Despite the drop in refugee crimes, Brandenburg remains a battleground for extremist views and acts. SPD politician Noack underscores the need for continued vigilance, particularly in the face of last Sunday's violent attack against a demonstration against the right in Bad Freienwalde.

Driving Forces Behind the Decrease in Refugee Crimes

The decrease in crimes against refugees is linked to increased law enforcement actions against far-right extremist groups, lower refugee intake, and sustained public and governmental awareness efforts. Police raids on terrorist cells, enhanced border controls, and an increase in rejections of unauthorized entries have contributed to the decline in refugee violence.

Moreover, proactive policing and judicial measures have helped contain violent extremist outbreaks, while public leaders like the Federal Minister of Justice have mobilized efforts to combat far-right extremism. General vigilance remains paramount to ensuring the safety of refugees in Brandenburg and addressing ongoing extremist threats.
