In a significant move, the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors has voted to lower the fee for a five-year concealed handgun permit from $50 to $40. This change takes effect from July 1, 2020, as the next fiscal year begins.

The decision was made in a split vote, with three board members favouring the reduction, while two believed the permit fee should be lowered further to $25. The original resolution aimed to lower the fee to $25, but it was amended to $40.

Roanoke County is now joined by Montgomery County and Bedford County, both of which have also adopted a $40 fee for a five-year permit. However, Bedford County stands alone in the region in having reduced its permit fee, with other counties, including Salem, Roanoke, and Franklin County, still charging the maximum $50.

Bedford County recently reduced their permit fee to $15 on a one-year trial basis. The Roanoke County Circuit Court Clerk's Office issues around 2,000 concealed handgun permits annually. It is important to note that these permits are issued for Roanoke County citizens only.

The previous $50 fee was the maximum allowed by the state of Virginia. The permit fees in Montgomery County and Roanoke County are now the same, while Bedford County's remains lower at $15. Other counties in the region, apart from Bedford, still charge the maximum $50 fee for a permit.

As of now, there is no specific information available that any other districts in the region, which currently require the maximum payment amount of $50 for a concealed handgun permit, have submitted or implemented a proposal to reduce the price.

The resolution was amended by the chairman of the Board of Supervisors. This change in the permit fee was passed following a thorough discussion and consideration of the impact on the county's budget and citizens.
