Decline of traditional television broadcasting
In a sentimental farewell, the HBO series "And Just Like That..." has come to an end after three seasons, marking the conclusion of the "Sex and the City" franchise as we know it. The final episode of the series is set to air in the USA on August 14 and in Germany on August 15.
The series, which navigates the complexities of life over 50 for the beloved characters, has received mixed reviews and a decline in viewer numbers during its third season. Despite this, the lead actress Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie Bradshaw, expressed her reluctance to say goodbye to the characters Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York.
The original series, which aired in the USA in 1998 and in Germany in 2001, was a global sensation around the turn of the millennium. Millions of fans followed the lives of the four main characters, identifying with their stories and the open, relaxed, and witty portrayal of their lives, especially their sex lives.
The series was based on the books of sex columnist Candace Bushnell and took the world by storm when the first episode aired. It became an award-winning show and a cult classic, with fans from the original generation still expressing hope that the series will continue someday.
However, the sequel series "And Just Like That..." did not resonate with the original fans, and failed to gain new fans from a completely different generation. Some fans even commented on social media that they only watched the series as a "hate-watch" - to make fun of it. The Guardian commented, "It's time for a sigh of relief" as "And Just Like That..." was never as good as "Sex and the City".
Despite the disappointing reception of "And Just Like That...", Sarah Jessica Parker maintained that the recipe for success for the franchise was "just keep going". The owner of the series house where her character lived in the West Village even applied to the landmark preservation commission for a gate for her staircase due to the influx of fans visiting the location.
As of now, there are no official plans for continuing the "Sex and the City" franchise following the conclusion of "And Just Like That...," with HBO confirming that the series will not return for a fourth season. Sarah Jessica Parker is reportedly exploring ideas for a potential spinoff series to protect the legacy of the franchise, but no formal spinoff has been confirmed as of yet. Showrunner Michael Patrick King has also conveyed a desire to conclude the story definitively, suggesting an intent to close the franchise rather than continue it.
In summary, the "Sex and the City" story as we know it has officially ended with "And Just Like That...", with no confirmed movies or further series planned, though discussions about spinoffs may occur in the future. Fans of the original series can only hope that one day, the story of Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte will continue in a new and exciting way.
