Decline in Refugee Numbers in Germany First Observed Since 2011 - Current Data and Origin Countries Revealed
Clara Buenger, spokesperson for the Left Party's interior and refugee affairs, has commented on the decrease in the number of people in need of protection crossing EU borders. According to Buenger, this reduction is primarily due to several factors.
Firstly, the suspension of family reunification visas for subsidiary protected persons, effective from July 24, 2025, has played a significant role. This move, combined with a significant drop in new asylum applications and protection grants, has contributed to the decrease.
Secondly, changes in asylum processing after the fall of Assad's regime in Syria in December 2024 have led to a decrease in the number of protection grants, thereby reducing the number of refugees entering Europe.
Despite the decrease, Buenger emphasised that most refugees are in need of protection. She also stated that the talk about an alleged emergency that would allow EU asylum law to be suspended is absurd.
Buenger further suggested that instead of discussing isolation, there should be discussions about integrating refugees into the labor market and society. She believes that this would be a more productive approach to managing the refugee situation.
It is important to note that the EU borders are heavily fortified and externalized. However, Buenger highlighted that illegal controls at the German borders are of lesser importance compared to the factors mentioned above.
Despite the decrease in the absolute numbers of refugees, Buenger stated that there are still many reasons for people to flee worldwide. She urged for continued empathy and understanding towards refugees, and for policies that prioritise their integration and well-being.
