Whoa, hold onto your Folks! Frontex has dropped a bombshell, revealing a whopping 47% surge in illegal entries into the EU within the initial five months of 2021, compared to the same period last year! Crazy, amirite? 🤯

According to the EU border agency, an astounding 63,700 attempts have been logged since January 1st. The Warsaw-based agency announced this stunning statistics on Wednesday, leaving many stunned by these alarming numbers.

Wanna guess where most of these determined border-rushers hail from? Well, you're in the right ballpark with your guesses: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Mali.

But here's the real kicker: the Western Balkans states saw the sharpest drop-off, with a seismic 65% decrease in illegal border crossings! meanwhile, the West African route and Eastern Mediterranean saw decreases of 35% and 30%, respectively. The number of migrants trying to sneak into Poland and the Baltic states from Belarus dropped by an impressive 7%.

However, the story doesn't end there. Frontex reported a quirky 7% uptick in the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean towards Italy. Meanwhile, the number of daring, would-be immigrants attempting the dicey English Channel crossing towards the UK swelled by a hair-raising 17% to a staggering 25,540! That's more than double the number of attempts in 2020!

Government's, you might want to be on your toes! These smuggling networks in the region have shown themselves to be flexible and adaptable, sending out multiple boats at once to boost their chances of success!

Although illegal border crossings decreased by 38% last year, that was mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic along with its brutal travel restrictions. Once those restrictions eased, travel movements took off like a rocket, leading to the massive increase in 2021.
