Decline in heavy truck sales: 3,377 units sold in July, marking a 33% drop

The sales and production of heavy-duty trucks in Mexico have experienced a significant drop in 2025, according to reports from Anpact. In July 2025, 3,377 heavy-duty trucks were sold, a 33% decrease compared to July 2024, with 16,266 heavy-duty vehicles exported, representing a 51% decrease in the same period [1][3][5].

The slowing economy, market uncertainty, and higher operating costs are the main reasons for the decline. The increased costs are particularly due to U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, and copper used in truck manufacturing [1]. Large logistics operators have delayed or scaled back fleet investments due to this uncertainty and increased costs [1].

The T-MEC (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) renegotiation is another factor affecting the industry. Although the trade deal framework provides legal certainty, clearer rules of origin, and incentives for regional manufacturing investment, the ongoing renegotiation and tariff impositions—especially on raw materials like steel—are creating uncertainty that negatively impacts the trucking industry [2][3].

Rosales, the executive president of AMDA, stated that there is a double-digit decrease in sales for almost all brands in the market. The production of cargo trucks fell by 63% in July 2025, tractors by 46%, and bus production by 80% [1]. From January to July 2025, 23,926 heavy-duty trucks were sold, a 24.6% decrease compared to the same period in 2024 [1].

Anpact, in an effort to boost sales, is interested in promoting the export of heavy-duty trucks to Colombia, Chile, Peru, and Ecuador [2]. They are also working with the federal government to renew the vehicle fleet and contain the import of used vehicles [2].

The food basket cost increased in both rural and urban areas in July 2025, according to INEGI, with increases of 2.9% and 4.3% respectively [6].

In conclusion, the heavy-duty truck market in Mexico is facing a challenging period due to economic slowdown, increased operating costs, and market uncertainty. The ongoing T-MEC renegotiation and tariff impositions are compounding the issue, hindering manufacturing stability and heavy-duty truck market performance in Mexico [1][2][3][5].

  1. Despite the challenges faced by the heavy-duty truck market in Mexico due to economic reasons and market uncertainty, Anpact is planning to promote the export of heavy-duty trucks to countries such as Colombia, Chile, Peru, and Ecuador, in an effort to boost sales.
  2. In addition to the difficulties encountered in the domestic heavy-duty truck market, the ongoing negotiations for the T-MEC (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) and tariff impositions on raw materials like steel are causing concern for sports teams and leagues in the States, as their supply chains and costs may be affected.
