Decision on candidacy to fill the vacant seat of the slain Minnesota House representative will settle the power balance in the chamber.
In the aftermath of the tragic assassination of Minnesota Democrat, Kirk, there is a palpable sense of unease in the political landscape. However, one of the contenders in Tuesday's special election, Xp Lee, has expressed a desire to quell the charged atmosphere and move forward.
The election in question is for the seat previously held by Lee, a former Brooklyn Park City Council member who won a three-way Democratic primary in August. His opponent is Ruth Bittner, a real estate agent who was the sole Republican on the primary ballot for the seat in the heavily Democratic district.
The outcome of this election could have significant implications for the power dynamics in the Minnesota House of Representatives. A victory by Lee would preserve a power-sharing deal, under which Republican Lisa Demuth became House Speaker, replacing Hortman, who took the title speaker emerita. This arrangement ended a three-week boycott by Democrats and led to most legislative committees becoming evenly split between Republican and Democratic members, with co-chairs from each party.
Meanwhile, another election is for the seat of Republican Sen. Bruce Anderson, who died in July. The winner of this election, state Rep. Amanda Hemmingsen-Jaeger, would require a special election to fill her House seat if she wins. Control of the Minnesota Senate isn't expected to change due to these elections.
However, if Bittner wins, it would put Republicans in a stronger position to force concessions from Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and a Senate that Democrats control by only one vote. Bittner, in response to the recent acts of political violence, concluded that "there's no way to solve this problem if we shrink back in fear."
The assassination occurred in June in Brooklyn Park, a suburb northwest of Minneapolis. Vance Boelter, 57, has been charged with federal and state murder, attempted murder, and other charges in connection with the June 14 attacks.
The special legislative election follows another act of political violence, the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah last Wednesday. It's important to note that there is no available information about which party Ruth Bittner represented in the special election for the Minnesota Senate on November 1, 2021.
Two more special elections will be held on November 4 in Minnesota Senate districts. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the outcomes of these elections will play a crucial role in shaping Minnesota's political future.
