Müller's Exit: Bayern's Bold Move and Eberl's Regret

Decision Explanation: "Thomas Müller showed signs of despair and anger"

Just when fans thought they'd seen the last of the legendary Thomas Müller with FC Bayern this summer, the shockwaves are still being felt. Sports director Max Eberl spilled the beans on "Doppelpass" about the decision, owning up to a personal mistake along the way.

The 51-year-old Eberl declared that the club's decision was for the sake of Bayern's future, acknowledging that he couldn't reveal all their plans just yet. However, hints are that come summer, there's a whole lot in store. Despite the lack of applause, Müller won't be playing for Bayern anymore.

"Müller's playing time started to dwindle since January," said Eberl, "and that's when the sports leadership started grappling with the issue. He's more than just a player; he's a legend of the club. But he didn't want a 'folklore contract' either."

Coming face-to-face with Müller at the end of March, Eberl admitted it was a tough conversation. "I could sense his disappointment and anger, and it wasn't a pleasant experience for me either. It was emotionally taxing, especially given that he's a club icon who has to leave."

Eberl stressed that it was a decision that came about with unanimous support from the club, even though it wasn't easy to stomach. Finances played no part in the decision.

Looking back, Eberl admitted his overly emotional response towards Müller in January was a regrettable mistake. "Müller doesn't need to negotiate much. If he wants to continue, we'll sit down, examine things, and then move forward," he said at the time. However, he failed to comprehend that the club's future would mean parting ways with a legend.

Confusion was caused when Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen indicated in the official announcement that they had reached a "common solution" and a "fair and amicable agreement." Müller, however, clarified that he was leaving the club against his wishes.
