DeChambeau Switches to LA Golf Irons, Takes Lead at LIV Golf Virginia Tournament
Bryson DeChambeau, always eager to amp up his game, flaunted a fresh set of irons at LIV Golf Virginia – the LA Golf BAD V3-W in 5-iron to 9-iron. Reminiscent of his setup at the International Series India back in January, the mile-a-minute Major winner was observed swinging a set of prototype LA Golf irons then.
Six months later, it appears DeChambeau has hopped onto the trialing train. These babies come with LA Golf BAD Prototype shafts, all stamped with the BD logo, which is a recurring sight across his golf bag.
Sporting its unique "bulge and roll" technology and a 37.5-inch single length, each iron sports an 80-gram tungsten weight on the toe, serving as a stabilizer to prevent the clubhead from closing prematurely. This design also encourages a controlled draw, aimed at minimizing wayward misses to the left.
DeChambeau shared the lead at LIV Golf Virginia alongside Martin Kaymer, chalking up a 5-under 67 that included a flurry of chip-ins. His short game hogged the limelight, but the current US Open winner also displayed some eye-catching iron shots, like his fairway bunker shot at the par 5 fifth.
Although he didn't divulge how the new irons performed, DeChambeau is in a prime position to seal consecutive LIV Golf titles, fresh off his win in Korea before the PGA Championship. Back then, he was wielding one-length 3D-printed Avoda Golf irons, which had been working wonders for him, clinching the 2024 US Open with them in the bag.
However, his adaptation to these new irons seemingly encountered some hitches, as shown by a subpar T5 finish at The Masters and a runner-up spot at the PGA Championship. Despite shining in areas like off-the-tee and around-the-green, he found himself in the 51st spot when it came to approach shots at The Masters.
Reflecting on his performance at The Masters, the 31-year-old admitted, "My irons? Yeah, I'm still figuring them out. Last week at LIV Golf Miami, I was struggling. For some reason, I feel like I get over it and go for the heel, and I try to pull through, and it just veers left. If I'd been even half decent with my irons this week, things would've turned out differently."
With the U.S. Open fast approaching, the impact of these new LA Golf irons on DeChambeau's performance in major tournaments is a tantalizing mystery to solve. Keep your eyes peeled!
