Deceptive videos showcasing the elderly creating homemade goods are fabricated
In a recent investigation by AFP, it has been revealed that a series of videos on social media platforms, featuring elderly individuals claiming to be in financial distress and selling handmade products, are actually part of a scam. These videos, which have been found across various accounts on TikTok, are manipulated and used to sell products that do not belong to the original creators.
The videos, which often depict an elderly woman with glasses promoting various products such as mini bags, customized figures, and home slippers, or an elderly man using a sewing machine and holding fabrics, are not what they seem. In reality, these individuals are young entrepreneurs or marketers using deceptive personas to promote and sell dropshipping products.
One such individual, identified as Noel, runs a workshop called WeaverDee in the UK. Noel has denounced that his videos are being stolen and used as bait for dropshipping. Examples of products found in these videos and sold as original on other online stores include Toy Story keychains on Aliexpress, home slippers on Temu, and miniature bags for storing headphones on Aliexpress.
TikTok's policy includes monitoring contents related to products or activities that may be risky, addictive, dangerous, fraudulent, or require extreme caution. It has been confirmed that these social media videos are fake and have been labelled as scams. Users who commit repeated violations on TikTok may see their accounts banned.
It's important for social media users to be vigilant and cautious when coming across such videos. Always verify the authenticity of the seller and the product before making a purchase. By doing so, we can help prevent such scams from spreading and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on social media platforms.
