Unveiling the Deception: The Gold Ring Heist
Deceptive spiritual figure falsely claims magic abilities in Bengaluru, swindles 70,000 rupee gold ring from car driver: Allegations
Meet A V Venkatakrishnaiah, a car driver based in the bustling city of Bengaluru, caught in a cunning scam. On April 19, outside a swanky hotel in Vasanth Nagar, he found himself face-to-face with a man cloaked in saffron robes, pretending to be a sadhu [2]. A series of bizarre spiritual interactions and intimidation tactics resulted in Venkatakrishnaiah inadvertently parting ways with a gold ring valued at ₹70,000 [1].
The Ruse:The incident took an unexpected turn when the imposter entered Venkatakrishnaiah's vehicle without a second thought, requesting water while he was on a phone call. To add to the mystique, the man began a bizarre spiritual interaction involving the exchange of rudraksha beads and his own hair, all wrapped in a piece of paper.
When the bewildered driver opened the package, he found a rose instead of the bead and hair as expected. The imposter, speaking fluent Hindi, spun this as a positive sign and pressed for Venkatakrishnaiah's gold ring as a gestured goodwill [2]. When the driver hesitated, the man raised his voice and smeared ash on both their foreheads, leaving the driver feeling disoriented and weak-willed [2].
"I honestly can't recollect what followed. I felt disoriented, and I suspect I may have given up the ring under the influence," Venkatakrishnaiah recalled [2]. The imposter then ordered Venkatakrishnaiah to drive away without looking back, warning him of potential trouble. It wasn't until much later that the driver realized he'd been tricked [1].
The Aftermath:
The CCTV footage from the location had already been overwritten, as the system only retains data for a week. However, the police are making a desperate attempt to identify the culprit by reviewing footage from neighboring buildings [1]. A senior police official suspects that the imposter might have partly disrobed prior to entering the vehicle, intending to shock or distract the driver [3].
