Eset's investigation reveals the contributors behind these slick scams are suspected Russian or Ukrainian fraudsters. Armed with AI technology, the scammers fabricate deepfake videos using real news footage as their foundation. The end product features public personalities vouching for the dubious Immediate Matrix platform.
Germany under attack
Since May, these phony videos have been a regular sight for German netizens, making them the primary targets of these attacks. Other countries like Canada, Japan, South Africa, and the Netherlands have suffered from variants of this deception as well.
Eset researcher Ondrej Novotny, who played a crucial role in unmasking the scheme, notes that "politicians and other celebrity figures are a treasure trove of material for AI scammers." He further emphasizes the abundance of images, videos, and audio clips available for these public figures, allowing AI tools to convincingly create the illusion of an endorsement.
Eset strongly advises against investing in such seemingly irresistible opportunities, stating that "If you fall for it, you lose your money." Nefarious actors have even gone so far as to harass and coerce victims into increasing their investments.
An uncanny act, yet unstoppable
Despite the poor quality and synchronization issues, these deepfakes are not deterring the scammers. Novotny explains that they need only a handful of victims to be swayed, just enough to transfer the required funds. Thus, this deceptive method offers lucrative returns for criminals with minimal investment.
In light of these revelations, cybersecurity authorities worldwide have urged action to combat this scam. Suggestions to protect users include raising awareness and enforcing stricter regulations on online investments.
