A Balanced Energy Transition: Olaf Lies Warns Against Burdening Northern Germany

Unjustified Information Spread about Energy Transition's Impact on Northern Communities: Steer Clear of Unfair Overloading - Deception in Energy Shift: Avoiding Unfair Burden on Northern Residents
In a candid conversation with the German Press Agency, Lower Saxony's Minister President, Olaf Lies, has called for a fair distribution of burdens during Germany's energy transition, particularly in Northern Germany. "The energy transition shouldn't turn Northern Germany into an overburdened sacrificing zone," Lies emphasized, highlighting the disproportionate costs and responsibilities shouldered by the region.
Northern Germany serves as the cradle for various forms of renewable energy, including offshore wind, LNG infrastructure, and future hydrogen production. But Lies insists that we should not overlook the burden this places on the local population. "Imagine constructing wind farms and then laying power lines overhead alongside them - that's asking too much," Lies said, stressing the need for underground cabling to maintain public acceptance for renewable energy projects.
Lies aspires to ensure that the benefits and costs of the energy transition are equitably shared across Germany. "We can't let the entire burden fall on Northern Germany," he argued, adding that he champions stronger compensation mechanisms for the region in federal energy policies.
As Minister of Economics and Energy, Lies has long advocated for the expansion of wind and solar energy. He has also pushed for LNG terminal construction and has expressed concerns about the coal phase-out by 2030. Lies now clarifies his stance, stating, "Our goal is not to import fossil gas indefinitely. We're building the necessary infrastructure to import climate-neutral gases in the future." He views these terminals as a stepping stone towards a green future.
In line with his perspective, Lies underscores that gas and coal power plants aren't intended to be permanently mainstays. "If the federal government can swiftly tend and construct new hydrogen-compatible gas power plants, we could phase out coal earlier," he proposed. However, he conceded that if this process takes longer, coal will remain necessary to ensure energy security.
Despite his concerns, Lies clarifies, "We won't shut down power plants we need to keep operational. That would be reckless." Concurrently, he aims to keep the energy transition on track.
A resident of Sande near Wilhelmshaven, Lies is personally familiar with the energy infrastructure developments in his neighborhood, yet he feels that this does little to win over skeptics of renewable energy expansion. Instead, he emphasizes the need to avoid concentrating burdens too much to earn public support for renewable energy projects.
