Last year's riddle of a woman discovered hanged in a Spanish chicken coop has finally been solved. Gain a glimpse into the life of 33-year-old Ainoha Izaga Ibieta Lima, the mystery woman that kept investigators at bay for years. Interpol's "Identify Me" campaign shone a light on this intriguing case.
The ingenious brainchild of Interpol, the Identify Me action has been proactively solving cold cases of women found deceased in Europe for decades. Recently, the puzzle pieces aligned for Ainoha Izaga Ibieta Lima, the woman who was found hanging in Spain in 2018, to be identified. Her remains were initially discovered in an unaccentuated chicken coop on a farm in northeastern Girona. With no documents or local connections, identifying her seemed impossible.
Welcomed by the world in March 2025, Ainoha Izaga Ibieta Lima was finally given her identity through the miraculous collaboration of Spanish and Paraguayan authorities. Among the crowd, she became the first successful transcontinental identification under Interpol's "Identify Me" campaign, as acknowledged by the organization [1][2][3].
Fueled by determination and state-of-the-art technology, the Identify Me campaign took a turn for the extraordinary. Originated in 2023 by Interpol and six European nations - Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands - the campaign vowed to divulge fingerprints, facial reconstructions, DNA profiles, or descriptions of body and clothing, information that was previously only internal.
Remember Rita Roberts? The British woman that met her untimely demise in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1992? Her story recently took a dramatic turn when the Identify Me campaign brought a glimmer of hope to the Roberts family. Reports of the campaign featured a distinctive tattoo that caught the attention of Rita’s relatives, who had been searching for answers since the unfortunate incident. After 28 long years, justice was finally served as Rita Roberts was identified in November 2023 [4][5].
Kudos to Interpol and its persistent efforts to bring an end to years of uncertainty and restore the lost identities of long-forgotten victims. Join us in paying our respects to these courageous women and spreading awareness of the Identify Me campaign.
