Here's a heads up for all Galeria department store shoppers! The reputable sporting goods retailer Decathlon is setting foot in selected Galeria branches, as confirmed by a joint announcement.
Starting in August, Decathlon will make its debut at the Galeria department store in the magnificent city of Konstanz. ambitious expansion plans have stores opening in Duisburg, Freiburg, Trier, and Kassel by the end of 2025, with possible additional locations in the pipeline.
A fresh breath for Galeria
The Decathlon stores are expected to span between 1,500 and 3,500 square meters. Galeria's purchasing manager, Alexa Deters, shared her excitement, stating, "Decathlon is a leading authority in sports equipment, and we're delighted to have them round off our sports offerings." Galeria had previously announced a partnership with Lidl set for autumn 2023.
After slipping into insolvency in 2023, Galeria underwent a restart in summer 2024, receiving court approval for takeover by the US investment company NRDC and a participation company of entrepreneur Bernd Beetz. The insolvency led to the closure of nine Galeria branches. Currently, there are 83 locations still operational.
With over 90 branches across its network, Decathlon expressed its aim to open more than 60 new stores in the near future.
