Canada's Damian Warner Withdraws from World Athletics Championships

Damian Warner, the former Olympic decathlon champion and four-time world championships medallist, has withdrawn from the world athletics championships due to a nagging Achilles injury.

The injury, which has been causing Warner significant discomfort, was confirmed by an MRI scan that revealed swelling and fluid in his Achilles tendon, but no tear. Despite the setback, Warner had been looking forward to representing Canada on the world stage again.

Warner's most recent world championships result was a silver medal, which he won behind Pierce LePage in Budapest in 2023. The decathlon was scheduled to run through Sunday night at Japan's National Stadium, and LePage, who missed the Paris Games in 2024 due to an injury, was set to compete.

Warner had been feeling strong leading into the championships, but the injury worsened over the last few days. In a bid to avoid risking further damage to his injury, Warner made the difficult decision to withdraw from the competition.

The news of Warner's withdrawal is a significant blow to Canada's athletics team, as he had been in top form leading up to the championships. His gold medal win at the Summer Games in 2021 at Japan's National Stadium was a testament to his resilience and determination.

Sarah Mitton, a two-time indoor world champion, will be representing Canada in the women's shot put qualifying heat on Saturday morning. It remains to be seen who will replace Warner in the decathlon, as the search results do not provide information about a potential replacement.

Warner expressed his disappointment at having to withdraw from the championships, saying that he is devastated about missing out on the opportunity to compete on the world stage. Despite the setback, he remains optimistic about his recovery and looks forward to making a strong comeback in the future.
